Holiday Gift Guide: Books

I've rounded up a few of my favorite books for a special Gift Guide because, well, TURN OFF THE TV ALREADY!!!

1. Your Money or Your Life by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin:  This was the first book that ever really made me stop and think about money in a completely different way.  It will help you figure out how much money you ACTUALLY earn and make you re-think how you spend that money.

2. Candy Cocktails by Flannery Good & Katherine Good: I know, I know, shameless self-promotion here, but it is SERIOUSLY a fabulous book that would make an awesome gift for anyone who likes candy and cocktails!  And who doesn't fall into that category???

2. Wishcraft by Barbara Sher:  There are not enough words to explain how much I love Barbara Sher and her passion for helping people take action.  Seriously, if there's something you want to do but can't figure out how, you NEED this book!

4. Coach Yourself to Success by Talane Miedaner: Whenever I'm feeling like life is spinning out of control, or I need a way to get out of a funk, I always reach for this book.  I've given it as a gift more times than I can count!

5. 99 Problems but a Baby Ain't One by Megan Silianoff:  When my question was recently featured on The Lively Show, Megan reached out to me and we became fast friends!  Her fabulous memoir is all about her experience with cancer, adoption and her love for Jay-Z.  As a fellow mother and white girl who loves hip-hop, how could I resist???

Vivi's Second Birthday Fiesta!

My daughter Vivienne's first birthday party was all about balloons, 300 to be exact!  This year, for her second birthday, I wanted to do a fun, colorful fiesta theme.  The best part was picking out our matching Mexican dresses and decorating the house with piñatas!  We had the party catered by our favorite local Mexican restaurant and my mom made an amazing salted caramel cake and cupcakes.  I bought authentic papel picado from a local Mexican art museum, whipped up some homemade margaritas using my favorite Fashionably Bombed recipe and used zinnias to make flower arrangements for the tables!  All in all it was smashing good time!

House Tweaker: My Closet Makeover!

There's something about starting your day with an organized closet.  It's like for the first few minutes of the day, as you're deciding what to wear, you can look around and say to yourself "Oh yeah! I got this!"  The rest of the day may fall apart, but at least you had a good start!  The very first thing I did when I got my advance for Candy Cocktails was order my new closet.  The original closet (from 1948) wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't super functional.  I wanted drawers, more hanging space and a built in hamper.  I decided to go with Easy Closets because I liked designing the closet myself online and my husband said he would install it for me.  There's a lot of prep work involved-measuring, cutting, etc...but he said it was fairly easy to install.  One thing's for sure- my days start off a whole lot better now!

Vivi & me on the beach last year!

Hello! Hello!  I just thought I would write a quick post to let you know that I'm officially on vacation! My husband is actually off of work for two whole weeks, which is very rare and amazing!  We will be taking full advantage of it by spending our time on the beach without phones or computers and I CAN NOT wait!!!  See you later alligators!

Style Inspiration: Miami Vice

In my mind I've always thought of Miami Vice as one of THE BEST TV SHOWS EVER MADE!!! But then I unfortunately happened upon an actual episode of it and I was like, "Ummmm this is THE WORST TV SHOW EVER MADE!!!" The story lines were really bad and the acting was painful.  Needless to say it was disappointing.  I realized that what I liked was the idea of Miami Vice, or rather ME living the Miami Vice lifestyle!  YAY-UH!!! I could totally picture myself in a pastel suit, palm trees, the warm balmy wind in my hair, Tubbs next to me in the Ferrari...but until I can move to Miami and realize that dream, I found a building that looked kind of Art Deco-ish and threw on some pastels and neon.

Fashion Tweak! H&M Gold Dress (Before)

On Tuesday I showed you the results of a Fashion Tweak that was inspired by a feature on pleated skirts in InStyle magazine.  I bought this H&M gold dress for $15 thinking it might make a good maternity dress a few years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter.  Since I never used it for that purpose I thought I would tweak it and turn it into a fab skirt!  I love how it turned out!  My mom said I look like a cocktail waitress at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas...and since nobody loves Las Vegas more than me, I'll take that as a compliment!  Ha!  Read the whole story and see the "after" photo shoot here
Step #1:  First I tied a piece of elastic around my waist to determine my waistline and I marked it.

Step #2:  I cut 1" above my marked waistline (chopping off the top half of the dress!)

Step #3:  I cut a 7" opening in the center back (this is where the closure will go)

Step #4:  Using the leftover top half of the dress, I cut a 3" wide piece of fabric to create a placket for the opening

Step #5:  I pinned the placket to the opening (gold metallic sides facing each other)

Step #6:  I sewed the 3" strip of fabric to the opening

Step #7:  I sewed two gathering stitches - one directly on the marked line (from step #2) and one about 1/4" above the marked line.

Step #8:  I put the gold band (officially called "Gold Metallic Pleather Belting" at the fabric store) around my waist and marked the back to know where to cut it (but make sure to leave enough room for the velcro closure!)
Step #9:  I pinned the gold band to match up with the bottom stitched line and sewed it.

Step #10:  I sewed in the velcro and added four snaps to keep it closed*

***I could have added a zipper instead of the snaps and Velcro, but I wanted this to be a fairly quick and easy "tweak"!***
